Familiar Friend – MRKT Gallery, San Francisco
2022
I was invited by the artist Anson Cyr to create a ceramic piece to go along with his paintings and masks during his first solo show in the city of San Francisco.
Ansen asked me to create a piece that integrated with his work and felt like part of a family. Pop culture characters from the US and Mexico are a recurring theme in his work, and he gave me a list of 12 characters to make a sculpture using them.
I created a vase that displayed all of the characters holding a red flower, an ixora coccinea, a flower that grows on my grandmother’s patio, and me and my cousins would pick to drink the honey inside them. Memories of childhood and feelings of nostalgia are represented through the characters, the flowers, and a messy glaze application. Tears of happiness, grass, and fingerprints are the final details of the piece.
